Welcome Bonus Comparison

Every licensed Michigan sportsbook offers a welcome bonus to new customers. The biggest dollar values look attractive but carry real risk; instant bonus-bet offers are lower-value but lower-risk. This guide compares each offer side-by-side and explains the four bonus structures used across the industry.

The four bonus types explained

Bonus bet match (instant)

Place a small qualifying wager; receive bonus bets immediately, regardless of result. Lowest-risk welcome offer. Examples: DraftKings, ESPN BET, bet365.

Bet & Get (contingent)

Receive bonus bets only if your first wager wins. Higher headline value but with a real loss exposure. Example: FanDuel.

First Bet Safety Net

Place a single qualifying bet of any size up to a cap. If it loses, the operator refunds your stake as bonus bets. Highest dollar value but you can still lose your stake on a winning second wager. Examples: BetMGM ($1,500), Caesars ($1,000).

Deposit match

The operator matches your first deposit up to a cap. Less common in U.S. sportsbooks since 2023; most have switched to bet-and-get structures.

Which welcome bonus is best?

There is no single "best" offer; the right choice depends on your bankroll and risk tolerance:

  • Low risk, low value: DraftKings or ESPN BET; instant bonus bets, no loss exposure beyond the qualifier.
  • Medium risk, medium value: FanDuel; $300 in bonus bets if your $5 wager wins.
  • Higher risk, higher value: BetMGM ($1,500) or Caesars ($1,000); large refund on a losing wager but you commit a real stake.

How to claim a welcome bonus

  • Sign up via the sportsbook's app or website while physically located in Michigan.
  • Verify your identity (name, address, last 4 of SSN); required by the Michigan Gaming Control Board.
  • Make a qualifying deposit using bank transfer, debit card, PayPal, or another accepted method.
  • Place your qualifying first bet; the bonus mechanic triggers automatically.
  • Bonus bets are issued as one or more single-use tokens, valid for the period shown above.

Bonus bet rules to know

Bonus bets are not cash. The face value of the bet is not returned with the winnings; only the net profit. Example: a $25 bonus bet at +200 returns $50 in cash on a win, not $75. Most Michigan operators forbid using bonus bets on certain low-odds markets (heavy favorites) or partial cash-out.
